The Dangers Of Dinitrophenol (DNP)
The toxic chemical used as pesticide in the UK has been found in some unscrupulous weight loss supplements online
Dinitrophenol (Known as DNP) is a synthetic chemical commonly used as a pesticide, that when taken orally, rapidly induces extremely fast fat loss.
Its commonly used by bodybuilders during cutting cycles but its use has also extended to diet pills.
Reported in the Irish Times recently, a mother told how her 21 year old daughter died after taking a weight loss supplement that contained a fatal amount of Dinitrophenol.
21 year old Eloise Parry, took slimming tablets that are believed to contain a toxic amount of DNP and died at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital on April 12th after taking herself there after she felt unwell.
Her mother Fiona Parry said;
“My message would be please don’t, please don’t take this drug. If someone makes the mistake my daughter did and takes too many of these pills, the doctors, the staff, if you go to hospital, if you go to A&E, they are not going to be able to get them out of your system.
They will take their toll and it is an awful way to die.
They cause you to overheat. They cause your kidneys to fail, they are dreadful things and it is not something you want to do to yourself.
I wouldn’t wish this on anybody.”* source
By the time Eloise had arrived at hospital, there was nothing the staff could do.
DNP causes an extreme increase in body temperature, making the body overheat and quite literally ‘cook’ from the inside.
Other side effects include:
- Yellow bodily fluids
- Electrolyte depletion
- Shortness of breath
- Reduced insulin production
History of Dinitrophenol
DNP made its appearance in 1930, with doctors administering 350mg a day to those wanting to lose weight. Its estimated that 100,000 people used some form of DNP, many died as a result and 2.5% of users ended up developing cataracts. It was subsequently withdrawn from sale in the USA.
An alternative use for DNP, was considered quite a valid one.
The Soviet Union discovered that DNP could help to prolong and maintain body heat production in soldiers in extreme weather conditions which potentially could save lives.
It was soon recognised as having some benefit and a russian doctor treated roughly 14,000 patients with DNP, before it was eventually used today in the bodybuilding industry.
However, the FSA (Food Standards Agency) and the HPRA (Health Products Regulatory Authority) state that DNP is not fit for human consumption.
If you have taken Dinitrophenol, you are advised to seek medical attention if you begin to feel unwell.
